The Musikero

After Kuya Chuck's passing, I can't help but think the life of a musician (thanks to my mum). First off, you have to have talent. Second, you have to have creativity. Third, you have to have confidence. Fourth, you have to have perseverance. And last but not the least, always build what you got and wear a smile to it. I can't help but think of how brutal it is to live in the world of music. Everybody else thinks it's easy to get on stage and perform. Sometimes it takes mastery of experience to live under the limelight and sometimes even that mastery is often unacknowledged. Click Here!

I knew Kuya Chuck as my mum's first boyfriend. Apparently, they met in high school and fell in love. But then, Kuya Chuck was seduced and tempted by my mum's best friend that he ended up cheating my mum. So my mum broke up with him and then he begged to reconcile. And since my mum was sneaky, she made him a deal: break up with her best friend and she'll come back to him. But just as he reported back to her the news, she left him. LOL! Click Here!

When I asked my mum what attracted her to him, she said that he was very talented. His talent sparkled with his guitar and his voice was amazing. Never knew my mum was such a fangirl but obviously it struck her fancy. Click Here!

I met Kuya Chuck in Cotabato City when he was actually paid to do a gig there. My mum introduced me to him and he was such a bright man. He was very friendly and warm and always wore a smile on his face. One day, he showed me his guitar. It was awesome. And even the hardbound case of it was already amazing. And then he started playing and the first song he sang to me was "Agila" by Joey Ayala. I can't forget that day. It was the day that I looked up to him. Click Here!

At that time too, he was having problems with his family. After years of work in Japan, he came home to find his wife has cheated on him and off she went to another guy with their kids and filed for an annulment. It was a tough time for him, but he pulled through albeit he was now alone. Click Here!

Years passed and we met again at Matina Town Square's "Taboan", an open pub for local artists. It's one of my favorite places in the world and I decided to celebrate my 18th birthday there. Coincidentally, he rented a spot for his resto there and that's where I planned my menu. I was so happy to see him, but on my 18th birthday he wasn't there. Still, I was happy that I got to celebrate my birthday under his wing. Click Here!

We met again at his home where he started his Durian Sweets business. We were kinda worried of the recent news then about his health. He still wore a smile but it was obvious that he was sick. He said that he's been taking medications and that he's gonna be okay. Click Here!

A few years later, we met again on my brother's death. And then we met again on my uncle's death. On my uncle's death, there was a grand family reunion and that's when one of my aunts had gotten close to us and we managed to bump into Kuya Chuck again. He was having problems with his land property issues against his relatives who were his caretakers at the same time. My mum and my aunts gave their moral support and he was very much grateful. And for that occasion, we went out for a drink. This was the first time when he offered me to sing at MTS (Matina Town Square). He's got all the connections and even introduced me to a few officers of the SAMADHI group in the pub. It was so overwhelming that the offer was truly tempting but I wasn't ready. And so he gave me time to gather all the songs I know and practice so that the next time we meet, I'll be ready. Click Here!

But we never met again. The last I heard from him was a phone call. He was in his province and he told me to prepare for my list of songs because he'll be coming back soon and he wants me to perform finally at MTS. I was so thrilled. Nine days later, he passed away. Click Here!

Looking back, he had a rough life. But through it all, he was always smiling. I could never forget that from him. Whenever he takes the stage and perform, I am always amazed and honored to have met him. I have always looked up to him and he was one of the few who believed that I can do it too. That may be one of the greatest things that I'll never forget. Click Here!

From Joey Ayala's Agila lyrics "Nais kong lumipad tulad ng agila..." (I want to fly like an eagle), you have indeed flown away. Thank you for believing, Kuya Chuck. I will never forget your wisdom and your smile. You will greatly be missed.
